INTERVIEW:Five minutes with Charles Webster

For those who don’t know Charles Webster, the man has been in the House/Dance scene for about two decades and has showered us with his beautiful music. The man is a star and an extraordinaire writer, producer, a disc jockey and a philanthropist who is still a real person with an amazing personality.

This pioneer of House was recently invited by the Do-It-Now Recordings to come and grace us (House music lovers) with what he does best.

So Kaizen Lifestyle Magazine was able to score an inteview with the main man before he jetted off to his home country.

Here’s what we gathered from the man himself.

1.What brings you to South Africa?
Charles Webster(CW):Do It Now Recordings approached me and asked me to come play in SA and also given me the platform to launch my compilation called Studio Soul.
2.What are you working on at the moment?

CW: It has been something nice and different. People this side are very passionate about music and i’m happy to play for people like that.

4.If you had to choose between being a disc jockey and producer, which one will you prefer doing?

CW: I would prefer making and writing music because that is a long term job; your music will always be there and played forever. Whereas, playing a gigs is just a temporary thing.

5.How do you give back to the community?

CW: I think it’s important for me to give back to the people who supports and love my music through what i’m best of. Charles will be playing at a charity event called “Cancer Sucks” that will be held at Chaf Pozi on the 8th October 2011.

6.Best three countries you have ever played in?

KANYE WEST LOUNCHES HIS CLOTHING LINE?

After being denied access from the Balmain show at the last Paris fashion week thanks to the notoriously tough, all black wearing KCD PR girls, Kanye West will be returning with a vengeance this season. The rapper and fashionista (who wore a Celine women's blouse from their Spring/Summer 2011 collection while performing at Coachella) has been the subject of much industry gossip suggesting that he would design for a variety of labels.

Then, it was announced he would be debuting his own line this season in Paris. Ballsy, to say the least. Details of the project have been kept on the down-low, but Vogue UK reports that Mr. West has brought on quirky, London-based designer Katie Eary as "one of the creative leads." Do a quick Google Image search for her designs and you will immediately see why her and Yeezy had a creative connection. In short, they're both nuts.

I know a lot of you feel that Kanye is totally overrated, and that he has no business getting involved in the fashion industry, but I disagree. Sure, scheduling your first runway show in what is practically the fashion capital of the world is definitely a bold and cocky move, but what else can we expect from him? We can't deny his swagger. We just can'

EMPOWERMENT: Sanlam National Start Something Day

Several months ago, South African finacial services provider Sanlam started an initiative called 'National Start Something Day' and the 2nd of September was chosen as the date for this initiative.

The whole aim of this initiative was to tackle the lack of savings amongst South African by asking any citizen to participate in the initiative by starting a hobby(be it anything they desire), learn a new language or even start up a new business venture. According to Reality.co.za "Its aim is to cultivate a community of go-getters that plan ahead and make dreams realities instead of waiting for things to happen – an attitude that more often that not ends with too little, too late: be it skill, opportunities or savings".

Participants were asked to submit their story or idea online on www.startwithhope.co.za, where they would be up against other participants to win R50.000 to start their initiative. Well today being the 2nd of September, Sanlam has chosen it's finanlist who are up on the side.

However we at KAIZEN LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE urge our followers to also start something from this day forward. With the unlimited opportunities and resources available here in South Africa, it shouldn;t be too hard to start an initiative that will not only benefit you but also your community and peers.

TV personality Thandy Matlaila, also known as The TeeLady in the PR world celebrated her birthday with close friends at Zar the past week.

The lady decided to have the intimate do midweek as to avoid gate crashers...and she succeeded. The do only boasted her close friends and media friends.

As you walked in, you were greeted in true Peroni style by the sexy promoter girls who escorted you to get your photos taken by the Peroni Wall (talk about branding). Peroni floated freely throughout the evening and great platters to keep hunger at bay.

Entertainment was provided by the delicious Boki (Idols 2010 finalist who's also releasing his album in the coming month). DJ Franky took over and got everybody onto the dance floor...even MR Sushi King Himself aka Kenny Kunene, who kept the VVIP booth to himself and his business associates.
In true Zar Style, they presented the birthday girl with a bottle of Vauve to toast with her guests. Talk about great hospitality

EMPOWERMENT:SA FASHION WEEK WINTER COLLECTIONS 2012

A feast of local fashion is on the cards for Johannesburg in September as SA's premier designer platform, SA Fashion Week, prepares to launch the Winter 2012 Designer Collections, its 20th seasonal showing since inception in 1997, as well as the inaugural SA Fashion Week Designer Capsule Collection with official retail partner, Edgars, a three-year partnership to showcase and promote leading local designers.

The two-week fashion blitz that kicks off on 22 September 2011 will wrap up with the Summer 2011 Designer Pop Up Shop from 30 September – 2 October 2011 in Sandton City's Fountain Court.

The SA Fashion Week Designer Capsule Collection at Edgars is scheduled to go live on 21 September at the Melrose Arch flagship store where it will be a permanent installation of eight to ten designers housed in a specially demarcated 70sqm space.

Six permanent designers - Clive Rundle, Lunar, Colleen Eitzen, Black Coffee, Two and Chanelle will be supplemented by between two or three additional designers which will rotate every month. The ranges will be seasonal and will include accessories and hats.

The SAFW Winter 2012 Collections will include top local designers such as  Amanda Laird Cherry, Clive Rundle, Ephraim Molingoana, Tiaan Nagel, Naked Ape  and Vesselina Pentcheva as well as bright new fashion star, Joel Janse van Vuuren who wowed audiences with his Summer 2011 collection earlier this year.

It will also include the Elle/Mr. Price New Talent Show featuring eight new designers. The Elle/Mr Price New Talent show has become a highlight of the annual fashion calendar and is generally regarded as the fashion industry's finest talent incubator having produced several top designers such as Terrence Bray, Jacques van der Watt, Ella Buter, Tiaan Nagel and David Thlale since its inception fourteen years ago.

The SAFW 2011 student competition sponsored by  Vodacom 4U, which this year tasked  second and final year design students across the country with the challenge of recycling an existing denim garment into a dress, is expected to deliver an equally sparkling burst of creativity as they aim to meet the brief to deliver garments that are high design, contemporary and de-constructed and using printing, crafting or other handwork to "rework" the fabric.

The winners will be announced at the SAFW Pop Up Shop on Saturday 3 September. The winners in all the categories as well as the winning colleges, will receive Apple Mac products. The prize for the winning final year student also includes an internship with a top local designer.

Having had a sneak peek at the key trends for  winter 2012, shoppers will be able to stock up on all the hot items for summer from 60 local fashion and accessory designers the following week as the Summer 2011 Designer Pop Up Shop goes live for three days in Sandton City's Fountain Court.

KAIZEN EVENT:Mzansi’s Most Popular Str.Crd blogs - Facebook on Steroids

SA is about to experience a popularity contest like no other. Four blogging teams from four cities have just four weeks to battle it out for the title 'Mzansi's Most Popular'. Whichever team gains the most Fans and Followers using any means at their disposal wins the competition - and walks away with a cash prize of R45k!

Mzansi's Most Popular is a countrywide blogging and social networking competition that culminates in Africa's only street culture showcase at STR CRD 2011 on Heritage Day, 24 September.

The STR CRD team has hand-picked the cream of SA's street blogging talent to get South Africa switched on and plugged in to the real urban youth cultures of their city's streets. This is Twitter with muscle and Facebook on steroids in a competition where every click counts.

Teams from Jozi, Cape Town, PE and Durban must win over the most Fans and Followers with their own brand of urban street culture and use any means at their disposal to do it. To get ahead, they must push the power of social networking and word-of-mouth popularity and dig up the best street talent, culture and style their cities have to offer.

Additional exposure on SonyMax, Motribe, Mahala.co.za and 5FM will give the teams a massive boost in their battle for supremacy as the competition takes each city's brand of urban cool to a nationwide audience.

Each team blogs daily about anything they consider to have street cred; kicks, skate parks, park jams, gossip, street fashion, events - whatever each individual blogger thinks has street cred.

Competition kicks off 24 August. Winners are announced 30 September.

Who's got Street Cred?

Team Jozi: Bloody Sweat Clique [www.strcrd.com/bsc] is Galebowe Mahlatsi, creator of the Thesis Social Jams in Soweto, Justin McGee street fashion photographer and Kitso Moremi, of The Blagg.

Team Cape Town: Bitches Must Know! [www.strcrd.com/bmk] is Paul Ward, social photographer at I AM PAUL WARD , Nicci St Bruce of City Kids and Hayden Manuel, sneaker freak blogger at Hakesy The Fat Cat
