This article is the beginning of a series of interviews, conversations, speculations in the attempt of understanding, uncovering and knowing about the fashion industry.
I come bearing more questions than I do any answers and many may ask why I would be bothered by this topic. Well it’s only natural, seeing as I am an entrepreneur in the fashion industry that I would want to know and understand the feasibility and sustainability of this kind of a business.
It started with the decision to study fashion, then came the challenge of obtaining the diploma and soon after it proved near impossible to start a career within the fashion industry. All this time I had chosen to ignore those who tried to convince me to reconsider my career path because apparently there is no money. In all honesty though it crosses each of our minds as to whether any success will result of the choices we make in relation to how we make a living. I put passion first and in the process of turning it into a business, I keep learning the importance of being knowledgeable beyond just being creative.
These days anyone with capital can open a clothing store and start a fashion label. There’s also the booming t-shirt printing business as well as boutiques and every second blogger starting their own fashion editorial at one point or another. None of these are bad ideas but how do we keep them buzzing with endless possibilities and make sure that they are profitable and sustainable business ventures beyond the glamour and hype of instant fame.
The scale of the fashion industry is massive, although it is quiet a young industry in our country. I intend on exploring as many of these avenues as I possibly can, in an attempt to get answers and find out the views of other fashion entrepreneurs and also to learn about the challenges and how they make it work and this is where it all begins……. To be continued
Be sure to check next week for an update of The Business of fashion or Fashion as a business.

Kaizen Bespoke:THE TRIED AND TESTED 10 COMMANDMENTS OF STYLE
1. THOU SHALL NOT WEAR ANYTHING OFF THE BOOT: if it does not have the authentic certificate then it is not original no matter how beautiful it looks. If u can’t afford the real deal rather support local designers who are also as good as international.
2. THOU SHALL NOT BE SEEN IN RUNNING SNEAKERS: you are not an athlete right? Keep those fancy running shoes at the gym or when your are participating in the marathon.
3. THOU SHALL NEVER EVER WEAR SUNGLASSES AT NIGHT: they are called sunglasses for a reason.
4. REMEMBER TO MOISTEN THY LIPS: it is always advisable to carry your OWN lip stuff; we know it sounds unimportant but ladies like a man who looks after himself and get turned off by chapped dry lips.
5. KNOW WHERE THY TAILOR LIVES: buy a correct size take it to the tailor to finish off the suit. The sleeves, the buttons, the pants need to be shortened etc, your suit has to be slim fitting.
6. NOW YOUR SOCKS CAN BE BRIGHER THAN YOU PANTS: despite what you have heard before regarding your socks and pants being the same color, you are allowed to go pink, red, and yellow with a black or even a navy blue suit. Just make sure the socks compliment the tie or shirt.
7. ALWAYS SMELL GOOD: we are not saying go buy a designer fragrance, if you can afford tom ford go for it. Have a trusted smell that will never disappoint.
8. REMEMBER TO CLIP THY TOE NAILS: if you got nasty toes stay away from open sandals and always clip you toe nails.
9. STAY AWAY FROM FEMININE HAIRDOS:, cornrows, plaits, and those dreaded pony tails? NOT COOL.
10. KEEP THY BREATH FRESH: buy breath mints, a breath spray, brush your teeth three times a day whatever you do never let you breath smell bad.

Kaizen @the Theatre:DECADENCE at the Old Mutual theatre on the Square
Steven Berkoff’s sensational international comedy hit is back!
DECADENCE
12th – 30th April
This naughty little number is a feast for all the senses…sex, temptation, indulgence, glorious extravagance,
desire… and a touch of murder! DECADENCE is theatre at its best - a risqué story of love and obsession, written by infamously mischievous British playwright, Steven Berkoff. The production will be performed by multiple Fleur du Cap nominee, Scott Sparrow and Fleur Du Cap nominee and winner Emily Child.
It will be presented at The Old Mutual Theatre on the Square from the 12th – 30th April in association with The Mechanicals theatre company of Cape Town - and directed by acclaimed comedic expert, Christopher Weare. DECADENCE was presented by the Old Mutual Theatre on the Square nearly a decade ago, starring Michael Richard and Fiona Ramsay.
The biting play is a comment on British society. It traces the sensual exploration of two couples’ hysterical love affairs and unusual fetishes, DECADENCE comments on the complex dynamics of man’s relationships not only with the opposite sex, but with food and copious amounts of money. Helen, Steve, Sybil and Les have seemingly nothing in common, except for their apparent inability to resist temptation...
The new production of DECADENCE played to two previous sold out seasons to critical acclaim
in Cape Town. In 2010 DECADENCE was the recipient of the 2009 Fleur Du Cap’s People’s Choice Award. DECADENCE is delicious and not to be missed – early bookings are strongly recommended. There are special discounts for group bookings, student groups, seniors citizens - and dinner /show packages can be arranged.
The critics have raved:
“Fearless young performers deliver a breathlessly entertaining and edgy production” 48 hours
“…theatre at its most imaginative and expressive, Decadence is compulsory viewing” Daniel Dercksen
“… brilliantly choreographed by director Christopher Weare” Brent Meersman, M&G
“…miss this production at your peril! Marianne Thamm Sunday Times

MSN Tips to help your business succeed on Twitter
Blundering about on Twitter? Follow our tips to streamline the process!
If you’re networking via social media, Twitter is probably one of the networks in your arsenal. But are you blundering about? Are you tweeting too much, or too little, or are you struggling to gain followers?
Follow our tips for mastering Twitter if you really want to get your name out there:
1. Follow people back. Unless your new follower is clearly a spammer, try to follow people back as often as you can. There is no reason to limit who you follow if you intend growing your following.
2. Tweet regularly. Although it isn’t necessary to be on Twitter 24 hours a day, seven days a week, you do need to join the conversation on a regular basis. Socialising is the entire point of being part of a social network, so be sure to respond to tweets, share them, ask questions and make a contribution to your network.
3. Don’t automate your tweets. Your followers are probably online much more often than you are, and they’ll pick up your repeat tweets relatively quickly. Repeat tweets and automated “Thank you’s” for following usually don’t garner a positive response.
4. Try not to use Twitter as a promotional tool only – some people make the mistake of only tweeting when they’re holding an event or want to share something related to their business. This is practically considered spamming, and will get you the boot in the social media world. Plus, if you only concentrate on yourself, you reject the idea of a social network, and negate the relationships you could be building with others in your business industry or with people who might end up being a consumer of your product.
5. Don’t chat too much, or be too personal. Socialise with moderation, and don’t concentrate too much on having a conversation with a single person. You also need to remember that, unless you’re using your Twitter account on a personal basis, people really don’t need to know if you’re hungry and “nomming” on a lovely doughnut first thing in the morning. Unless that doughnut was made by you, or a competitor and you’re slamming it.

Kaizen Review: O Access || Dineo Moeketsi
Tuesday night TV has a new girl: Dineo Moeketsi
When word broke out early last year that Channel O’s O Access was looking for a new continuity presenter after the departure of Nonhle Thema to Vuzu TV, little did we know we’d be introduced to Dineo Moketsi, O Access’s new bubbly, beautiful and oh so sexy presenter.
Since getting the new throne, Dineo has been under the radar and the only time we saw her present was at The Channel O awards last year and ever since we have not seen her on screen showcasing her skills. Well that is up until last night when O Access season 5’s debut show aired and we finally met @therealdineo (as she is known on twitter) the O Access presenter rather the new ‘’IT’’ girl.
With the buzz that was building up via Channel O and social networks including BBM and Whatsapp, we were not sure what to expect from season 5. It’s easy to see why she won the hearts of O Access’s top dogs, Dineo did a stunner job executing the debut show with interviews from Audio Push famous for their hit song Teach me how to Jerk and R&B superstar Trey Songs. She looked confident, bubbly and was very calm as if she’s met these artist’s way before their fame, talking about their careers and how they started out and what the African audience can expect in the future from them.
I’m sure this season’s O Access rating will sky rocket as Dineo has a killa body and curves for days. She definitely won my approval and I will be sure to make a date again next week to see more of her and the exclusive interviews. Tuesday nights will never be the same again.

Kaizen Bespoke:3 ESSENTIALS THIS AUTUMN.
3 ESSENTIALS THIS AUTUMN.
Autumn is here and it is still warm outside so do not take out your coats and chunky knits yet rather shop around for these 3 must have items. These items are real classics and we assure you that you will still be wearing them for seasons to come.
1. DENIM SHIRT-this item has been around for ages and this season it Is making a major come back, make sure it is fitted, fold the sleeves and tuck it in. Get these in any shade either in indigo or washed faded blue.
2. KHAKI CHINOS-Our grandfathers wore these in shorts and since then these have been all time favorites’. Make sure they are tapered, slim fitted and please do not drop them low make sure they sit right at the waist unless you going for a hip hop look.
3.LOAFERS/BOAT SHOES- we absolutely love these get them in either brown, navy or black or be brave and get them in your bright candy shades like royal blue, bright green, purple or even yellow. These will look great if you roll up your chinos and show a bit of skin
*add in a quality wallet to complete the look*

Kaizen Bespoke: HOW TO TAILOR A SUIT
HOW TO TAILOR A SUIT
Every man needs at least one classic perfect fitting suit, preferably in navy blue or black, a suit that will fit into any occasion. The problem with most men is that when they think suit they think high end designer boutiques and end up with an ill fitting expensive suit which is pointless and a waste of money. So if you do not want to look like popeye and spinach from zone 14 at the SAFTA award 2011 try these simple steps:
1. FIND A REPUTABLE TAILOR. A lot of department stores or men’s boutiques have in house tailors and you usually won’t pay extra charge if the tailor is in house.
2. CHOOSE YOUR FABRIC. This can be a bit tricky, but it really is not that difficult. The fabric of your suit makes all the difference, choose between cashmere, wool, cotton or blends try to stay away from linen here you are looking for a suit you will wear for seasons to come. Remember fabrics are graded from low 80s to higher 180s (quality of the fabric) anything above 110 is very good quality and durable meaning a higher price.
3. GET THE RIGHT FIT. This is the most important stage and your tailor must have taken all the required measurements to make sure your suit fits like a glove. Your tailor might be experienced but I advice you communicate and ask questions. Remember the sleeves should at least show 3 inches of your shirt, the shoulders should snuggle you and the pants should never ever reach the heel of your shoes.
4. DETERMINE THE SIZE. Do you do 2 or 3 button? Double breast or single breast, a modern or traditional peak? This one depends on the current fashion trend, but if you are the conservative type stick to a navy blue single breast with 3 buttons. Read fashion magazines to find out which styles are in season if you are the fashion conscious type. Remember if it’s a 3 button you only do 2 buttons and if it’s a 2 button you do 1 got it?
5. PERSONALIZE IT. This is the fun stage whatever you do don’t get too excited or you will mess up craftsmanship. Here you choose the type of buttons, the lining, pockets and stitching and the minor details to make it yours alone depending on the current local and international trends.
6. FINAL FITING. This stage is critical as it will determine if your tailor is a keeper or not. Check all angles and remember to ask questions if you are not too sure about certain n things, you are footing the bill after all right? Wear shoes when trying the suit on to make sure the length is perfect and enjoy.

Louie Vega’
Irreplaceable to the scene, “Little Louie” Vega is the quintessential music professional. He’s the DJ’s DJ; an influence who’s defined countless other DJ-producers, from today’s stars to those still beat-matching in bedrooms. In 2008 the Grammy Award-winning DJ, producer, songwriter, label owner, band-leader and tireless champion of house and world music is only getting better; from Latin to Salsa, Afro-beat to jazz, hiphop to classics and all forms of house/dance music, the best is yet to come.
Black Coffee
Durban-born, Nkosinathi Maphumulo, has been on the music scene for over a decade but only got his break a few years ago. Black Coffee is popular for his smash hit remixes, most of which have dominated the airwaves in the past couple of years.
Liquideep
The Liquideep duo is made up of singer, songwriter and producer, Ziyon as well as DJ and producer, Ryzor, who got together in 2007 over a mutual love of house music. Just two years later, their track ‘Fairytale’, received a SAMA nomination for Song of the Year as well as a Channel O Music Video Award for ‘Most Gifted Dance Video’.
Vinny Da Vinci
Raised in a musically-inclined family in Atteridgeville, Pretoria , Vinny is one of the most important figures on the South African dance music scene. He has helped to galvanize deep club culture in his various capacities as Producer, DJ and partner in the House Afrika empire.
DJ Christos
A legendary DJ and one of South Africa`s most respected House producers. He is credited for the current flourish in the South African House music scene. Christos was one of the founders of the Kalawa label and via this and his own Katsaitis Music he’s been responsible for releasing some of SA’s most groundbreaking artists, including Boom Shaka, Lebo Mathosa, Shana, Daw and Black Coffee.

Rocco started his first residency in Lyon, France in 1994, but later moved to Portugal holding residencies at various clubs before returning to France.
Ralf GUM
As respected figure in the House music scene for his exceptional productions and DJ-sets, Ralf has played at more than 300 German and international spots, including gigs all over Europe, Japan and the United States. Ralf`s career was kick-started in 1990 and he’s stayed true to his passion for cool and diverse sounds - the key ingredients being harmony, soul and groove - ever since
DJ Fresh
Thato started out in radio in Botswana in the early nineties. He gave up his law studies and pursued a career in radio fulltime, joining YFM in 1997. Fresh presented the YFM breakfast show in 2003 and then moved to 5FM in 2006 where his show has since become one of the station’s most popular shows.
DJ Tira
Mthokozi Khathi formed the DJ duo ‘Durban’s Finest’ together with Dj Sox in 2004. They were the team that first exploded the Durban sound onto the South African dance scene. After hooking up in the mid-90s to hone their skills, it was actually DJ Fresh who secured Tira and Sox the limelight their unique sound needed, and he initially signed them to his Big Dawg Productions label before helping them seal a deal with Sheer Sound.
CULOE DE SONG
Culoe’s serious music career began in early 2007 where he produced a piece that was included on Black Coffee’s second album offering, “Have Another One”. The track was named “100 Zulu Warriors” and is considered ‘his beginning’ in the circle of music in South Africa.
DJ Strat3gy
Jo’burg-based, but globally mobile, media maverick DJ Strat3gy (aka Glenn van Loggerenberg) mixes his passion for driving 4/4 beats with a formidable array of media skills which span the worlds of music distribution, broadcast, online, mobile and event staging. As a seasoned turntable DJ, currently appearing two to three times a week as DJ Strat3gy in clubs and on TV and radio, he is focused on elevating the art of the DJ to visual broadcast quality and mixing media with the live feel of an afrotronic dance floor.
The Maestro

Kaizen Review: PUMA SOCIAL CLUB
PUMA SOCIAL CLUB
PUMA hosted a 3-days PUMA event dedicated to The After Hour Athlete. The event was held at the CORNER House (on 77 Commissioner Street and Simmonds). The building looked abanded from the outside but as soon as you stepped in, PUMA branding was everywhere making you forget that this is the Joburg CBD.
7 floors up, we get introduced to the sounds of Dj Kenzhero (yes we were fashionably late). There were plenty of activities such as Table Tennis, Pool and Foosball to hype up the event. The rooftop had a food stall(by Spur) and more table tennis table’s and the CBD view from the rooftop was absolutely magnificent.
After a one and half set by Kenzhero, DJ 1D stepped up and also delivered an awesome set of Hip Hop tunes taking us back to the sounds of Notorious BIG, Naughty by nature, J Dilla. At the stroke pf midnight popular house dj and producer Dj Clock who played a 2-hour to wrap up the night and the last day of the PUMA SOCIAL CLUB.

Kaizen Review :CNR537 ft Kid Fonque
CNR537 ft Kid Fonque
When we got an invite that Soul Candi’s Kid Fonque was to be hosted by CNR537, we already knew that it was going to be the start of a great weekend. So Friday night the Kaizen team headed down to CNR537 in Dube Village to hear why he is deemed as the deep house kid (no pun intended). Now I’ve had a lot invites to CNR537 sessions but i’ve never had the time to attend and boy was I surprised when we got to Dube Village. It turns out that CNR537 is a corner house(yes a corner house) and it was packed to the rafters with
the Soweto crowd.
Thami Letsoalo, the guy behind these sessions has become famous for hosting a number of popular dj’s such as Wireless G, HOUSECATZ, Bilal, Bobo,Subrocc, Sanza and most recently Kid Fonque.
Kid fonque delivered a 2-hour set of nothing but soulful and deep house music which got the crowd moving like there’s no tomorrow. Even my hostile colleagues who mostly listen to Hip Hop and Soul music where moved by Kid Fonque’s tunes. With supporting dj’s Sanza, Black DJ, HOUSECATZ, SGEMSHA also delivering killer house sets.
Check out what went down and who was there...for further pics check them on facebook under Kaizen L Mag.

UPDATE:John Galliano vs Dior
It has been over a week since the arrest and release of fashion guru John Galliano, it’s a pity Christian Dior was not as lenient as the French police who released him from prison shortly after his arrest. Galliano has apologized for his behavior after Dior suspended him over anti-Semitic remarks he made at an up market café in Paris after a few glasses of wine just over a week ago.
He also said that unifying people of different race, religion and sexuality has been his guiding light. On a sad note Dior has released a statement on Tuesday saying it had commenced termination proceedings in the light of the deeply offensive statements by Galliano. So Galliano will be saying goodbye Dior after 14 years as the creative director. Will Christian Dior suffer because of the departure of Galliano? We will have to wait and see who will replace him.

Kaizen Bespoke: SO WHO IS TO REPLACE JOHN GALLIANO!?
JOHN GALLIANO vs DIOR
So international fashion icon and head designer for Christian Dior John Galliano is racist and loves Hitler?
Well that is according to a you tube video. The very flamboyant designer was arrested on February 25 for throwing anti-Semitic insults at a couple on a night out in Paris. The designer was later taken to a police station for sobriety tests, the state prosecutor recommended his release and charges were not filed this is according to a Britain’s Guardian newspaper.
Galliano 50 was fired at the house of Dior as head designer last Tuesday and his Paris fashion week runway show has been called off. “Anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society. I unreservedly apologize for my behavior in causing any offence” those are the words of Galliano himself. Question on the international fashion world is who will replace this amazingly talented designer at Dior?

5 Minutes with Atjazz
It’s been a long time waiting but it’s finally here and he’s here to move your hips. So ladies and gentlemen put on your dancing shoes and get those cameras clicking because Atjazz will be playing at one of your favourite clubs or pubs in South Africa. The guy has graced us with many killer tracks like “For Real”, “Moments” and “Chasing” to name a few, you better go and hear what his got to offer.
On the chair with Atjazz...this guy has a very busy schedule for the tour and was able to grace the Kaizen team with few minutes of his time and made an interview with us. Martin aka "Atjazz" Iveson is one of the humblest guys ever. He was accompanied by Dj Gobbs from “Do It Now Recording” and this is how the interview went. Enjoy!!!!!
Kaizen: Who is Atjazz?
Atjazz: My name is Martin Iveson aka Atjazz, I grew up in the North of England. When I was little boy I used to like making sounds with my fingers and my father bought me a tiny synthesiser. I started making music in the late 1980’s and one of my friends introduced me to the new record label and made tracks for them. I started in the music industry as a producer and then dj a little bit.
Kaizen: When did you get a “Big Break” of making it in the industry?
Atjazz: I don’t know if i have (laughing), maybe this SA tour is one of the “big break” for me. It’s very nice if you guys think so. However, I feel like I’m here to do something not only for myself but for other artists, help people write better quality music and help them realise when their music is good. I tell people that music is only good when it gives you goose bumps and when you feel it. That’s the energy when you feel music feeds you, you know.
Back to answering the question, I don’t know if I’ve made a big break yet but I’ve never heard so many people screaming at me like crazy at House 22 (debut tour), people were screaming and I couldn’t even hear my record while I was playing.
Kaizen: What motivated you to write a track like “Please My People”?
Atjazz: That track is about me leaving my job, i was working at the big videogame company for about 13 years. The company i was working for was paying good wage bit it wasn’t fulfilling because i wasn’t really doing what i needed to do with my arts. So i left the job, if you could listen to the lyrics of the “Please My People” track is about pushing my work down, pushing it to the dirt and letting me carrying on with my passion. So now I’m free and here to “Please My People”!!!
Kaizen: Where do you get inspiration to write such music?
Atjazz: When I’m working i get into a sync and time just stops still...for me it’s like meditation, so is time i get to be in a moment between myself and the sounds. Nobody is in my head and that’s basically the thing because it feels like to me i don’t have to look for inspiration it feels like is the time in a clear empty space.
Kaizen: Is this your first time playing in South Africa?
Atjazz: Yes it is and so far i love the country, the tropical hot weather which is way better than in U.K it’s good for me. Here people are like...moving slowly not in a hurry and everybody seems to be super friendly and generously warm.
Kaizen: How did the tour came about?
Atjazz:Well, in 2010 i had communications with “Do It Now Recordings” and BBB music they talked to me to come play in SA. In August last year i had about eight people who wanted me to come this side nothing happened. Then by October 2lani “the warrior” spoke to me in bringing me here and arranged the gigs with “Do It Now Recording”
Kaizen: How would you view house music in S.A as compared to the one in Europe?
Atjazz: Here house music is like a lifestyle and it’s big whereas in Europe it’s like as the saying goes “there’s too many chefs and little onion”. Everyone wants to be the person at the top unhappy not to be just a fan or enjoying house music. Down here, music in their lives makes them feel happy, dancing or whatever.
Kaizen: Do you see yourself working with any local artist or producer?
Atjazz: Actually yes, I’ve joined with Do It Now Recording and did a remix of “Ngawe”. Beside that project I would love to work with Black Coffee but his also touring as well.
Kaizen: Which artists/vocalists have you featured on your latest projects?
Atjazz: I work a lot with the voice of Amalia (Canadian vocalist) who is based in Sweden. I’m also working with Tracy K and we doing a couple of demos for Vega Records. Tracy K is the vocalist who sings ‘cure and the cause’. In SA there is Kholi from C9ine we did a “Chasing” remix and I must say it’s rare to hear a voice I say wow I would like to work with and Bonga (Afro’traction) is the “Ngawe” vocalist from Do It Now Recordings. I don’t like working with singers that everyone have worked with, it’s more about working with new acts.
Kaizen: You probably have a busy schedule for the year ahead...what can we expect from Atjazz this year?
Atjazz: A tour is arranged for me to go play in the U.S and I’ve just finished mastering and releasing an album. In May, Atjazz remix history will be on shelves which is a 3 disc album. This will contain of my remixes through my career. Then July is the Southport Weekender at an Island in Croatia.
Kaizen: Which club are you a resident at down there?
Atjazz: Club life is no that on that side but i have a regular thing in 333 and play at a spot in London-Derby. There is a spot where we take new upcoming producers and dj’s and play their mixed tracks then put their name on the big screen just to give them exposure and market them...this is actually a good way of finding artists.
